Cell-Based Tracers as Trojan Horses for Image-Guided Surgery

نویسندگان

چکیده

Surgeons rely almost completely on their own vision and palpation to recognize affected tissues during surgery. Consequently, they are often unable distinguish between different cells tissue types. This makes accurate complete resection cumbersome. Targeted image-guided surgery (IGS) provides a solution by enabling real-time recognition. Most current targeting agents (tracers) consist of antibodies or peptides equipped with radiolabel for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Single Photon Computed (SPECT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) labels, near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) dye. These tracers preoperatively administered patients, home in targeted tissues, visualized the operating room via dedicated systems. Instead using these ‘passive’ tracers, there other, more ‘active’ approaches probe delivery conceivable living (macrophages/monocytes, neutrophils, T cells, mesenchymal stromal cells), cell(-derived) fragments (platelets, extracellular vesicles (exosomes)), microorganisms (bacteria, viruses) or, alternatively, ‘humanized’ nanoparticles. Compared active contrast might be efficient specific tumors other pathological (e.g., atherosclerotic plaques). review an overview arsenal possibilities applicable concept cell-based IGS.

Siderophores as “Trojan Horses”: tackling multidrug resistance?

Microbial drug resistance is partly due to hindered diffusion through the membrane of microbial cells and active transport mechanisms. An approach to counter such resistance uses the bacterial iron transport system. Extracellular free iron is scarce in vertebrates, yet essential for microbial growth (Anderson et al., 2012). A mechanism displayed by microbial pathogens to cope with iron scarcity...

Silicon particles as trojan horses for potential cancer therapy

BACKGROUND Porous silicon particles (PSiPs) have been used extensively as drug delivery systems, loaded with chemical species for disease treatment. It is well known from silicon producers that silicon is characterized by a low reduction potential, which in the case of PSiPs promotes explosive oxidation reactions with energy yields exceeding that of trinitrotoluene (TNT). The functionalization ...

Event-Based Method for Detecting Trojan Horses in Mobile Devices

Mobile phones and wireless technology and its constant evolution have, in the last years, revolutionized the way in which we communicate and work. However, one of the main barriers encounter in the use of these technologies is data security. Trojan horses are dangerous software to attack phones, PDAs and Smartphones. New versions are created everyday to attack the functionality, theft the store...

False friends: Phagocytes as Trojan horses in microbial brain infections

Humans are constantly exposed to pathogenic microbes. The first line of cellular host defense is composed of “professional” phagocytes, cells that efficiently recognize pathogens, internalize them, and then marshal an array of antimicrobial mechanisms to destroy them. Nevertheless, successful pathogens evade or survive such attack. A particularly subversive strategy is to manipulate normal phag...
